There are plenty of cafés in Queenstown with good coffee and a nice view.

But very few carry the weight of history quite like The Boat Shed Cafe & Bistro.

Set right on the edge of Lake Wakatipu at Frankton Marina, this is more than a place to sit down for brunch. It’s a building that has lived many lives, carefully restored and reimagined into the lakeside café it is today.

A building shaped by Queenstown’s past

Long before it became a café, The Boat Shed began its life in the late 1800s as part of Queenstown’s working waterfront.

Originally built between 1869 and 1878 by J.W. Robertson and Company, the structure served as a goods store near Steamer Wharf. At a time when the lake was a vital transport route, this was a place of movement, trade, and connection.

By the early 1900s, it had taken on a new role as the New Zealand Railways ticket office for the Lake Wakatipu steamer service. Travellers would pass through here on their way across the lake, beginning journeys that are now part of the region’s history.

In 1936, the building was relocated to its current site at Frankton Marina, where it became a modest holiday cottage. Over the decades that followed, it quietly shifted through different chapters of local life, from family retreat to workshop, each adding another layer to its story.

Restored with purpose

By the early 2000s, the building had reached a point where its future was uncertain.

It was the work of the Wakatipu Community Maritime Preservation Society that brought it back to life. Through a careful and considered restoration, the original character of the building was preserved, while creating a space that could be enjoyed by the community once again.

Today, that same building is home to The Boat Shed Cafe & Bistro, sitting alongside a collection of maritime history that continues to honour the lake’s past.

It’s a space shaped by many hands, and many years, of quiet dedication.

The view that never changes

While the building has evolved, one thing has remained constant.

The view.

Lake Wakatipu stretches out just beyond the tables, with The Remarkables rising in the distance. There’s no road between you and the water, no interruption to the landscape. Just the stillness of the lake and the rhythm of the marina.

It’s a setting that feels both expansive and grounding at the same time. The kind of place where mornings slow down without needing to try.

A café grounded in place

What makes The Boat Shed iconic isn’t just the view, or the food, or even the building itself.

It’s the combination of all three.

Seasonal dishes that feel generous and considered. Coffee that’s worth lingering over. And a space that carries more than a century of local history within its walls.

For visitors, it’s a chance to experience a different side of Queenstown. For locals, it’s something familiar and quietly special.
