New Winter Menu at The Boat Shed Cafe: Lakeside Comfort Food in Queenstown

Winter has arrived in Queenstown in the way it always does. The lake turns steel blue, the mornings carry that sharp edge of cold air and long brunches and slow lunches start feeling less like a luxury and more like a necessity.

At The Boat Shed Cafe & Bistro, winter has always been one of our favourite seasons by the lake. The fire’s on, The Remarkables disappear in and out of the clouds across Lake Wakatipu, and the whole marina settles into a quieter rhythm. Naturally, the menu shifts with it.

Our new winter menu leans into everything we love about this time of year. Comforting flavours, seasonal produce, generous plates, and dishes designed for the kind of dining that encourages you to stay a little longer.

New dishes for slower winter mornings

One of the newest additions is the Black Doris Plum & Rhubarb Cereal, which brings together toasted nuts and rice crispies with caramelised plum, coconut labneh, and mulled wine rhubarb compote. It’s rich and tart with just enough crunch, sitting somewhere between nostalgic and quietly indulgent.

The Butternut Squash & Feta on Rye has quickly become one of those dishes that feels made for Queenstown winter mornings. Wild thyme honey roasted pumpkin layered over toasted rye with whipped feta and candied pumpkin seeds. Sweet, savoury, warming, and best eaten slowly with a hot coffee beside the lake.

Then there’s the new Beef Burger, which fully embraces proper winter comfort food. Angus beef, smoked cheddar, spicy pickles, onion relish, and chipotle aioli in a soft milk bun. Exactly the kind of thing you want after a cold morning walking along the lake front.

The Japanese Chicken Sandwich might be the new staff favourite. Crispy karaage chicken, slaw, pickled cucumber, cheese, and wasabi mayo tucked into a milk roll. Crunchy, rich, sharp, comforting. The sort of lunch that disappears very quickly once it hits the table.

Winter drinks worth lingering over

And because winter drinks deserve their own moment too, we’ve added a few seasonal favourites designed specifically for cold Queenstown days.

Our newest winter warmer combines rich hot chocolate with Baileys for something smooth, warming, and very easy to linger over while watching the weather roll across the lake.

We’re also pouring mulled wine throughout the season, ideal after a marina walk or for settling into a long lunch once the temperature drops.
